New Haven Tennis Tournament Goes Women-Only

Pilot Pen dropped its sponsorship of the professional tennis tournament in New Haven after the event in August and who would take over has been a mystery.

On Tuesday, officials from the city, the tournament and Yale University said the event will become a women's-only tournament called the the "New Haven Open at Yale."

Aetna, American Express, Yale-New Haven Hospital and Yale University have made three-year commitments to sponsor the event.

Pilot Pen announced in 2009 that it would drop its sponsorship of the professional summer tennis tournament held each year at Yale. The 2010 tournament was the last for the pen giant.

Pilot Pen began its relationship with the tournament in 1996, taking over for Volvo, which had been the title sponsor from 1990, when the event started in New Haven.

The tournament is part of the U.S. Open Series.tournament. It will be held Aug. 19 to 27, 2011 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.
