New Yale Committee to Address Sexual Misconduct

Different schools have different procedures when a complaint is filed.

Yale University has created a committee to address allegations of sexual harassment and other misconduct after students that the Ivy League school filed a complaint that the school failed to adequately respond to concerns.

The University-Wide Committee on Sexual Misconduct will begin July 1 and make it simpler for students and faculty to pursue complaints Yale officials said.

Yale officials told the Yale Daily News that they have not received the actual complaint filed and that the school does not tolerate sexual harassment or misconduct.

Yale College Dean Mary Miller told the Daily News that the university’s current policy on sexual grievance procedures are different for the college, the graduate school and each professional school. If the complaint deals with different schools, it’s not always clear how to proceed.

The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights is investigating the complaint from 16 current and former Yale students who claim the school has a sexually hostile environment and failed to respond promptly or effectively to harassment incidents.

Yale said it will cooperate with the investigation and does not tolerate sexual harassment or other misconduct.

Yale officials said the process that led to the committee began a couple of years ago.
