New Haven Cops Honor Fallen Sergeant

For the last six weeks, New Haven police officers entering the security zone in their lobby have passed a large color picture of a smiling Sgt. Dario "Scott" Aponte.

Wednesday, that photo became a permanent addition to the lobby at One Union Avenue, along with other New Haven police officers who were killed in the line of duty.

Aponte died in a car crash in September, along with another officer who was responding to a domestic violence call.

"This is very meaningful for all law enforcement, especially the people who work in this building," said Joe Avery, a veteran officer.  "This is a constant reminder of the sacrifices that police officers make on a daily basis."

He said Aponte's widow, also a police officer, is about to return to duty.

Avery said the officer injured in the collision with Aponte, Diane Gonzalez, is still in a coma.
