Louise Najean hadn’t heard from her husband back in Haiti since the earthquake hit and hadn’t been able to go to work since Tuesday, but on Sunday morning, she got an incredible surprise.
“He called me this morning,” said Najean. “He was so happy to tell me he was alive. He has a broken arm but he’s still alive.”
She is a member of First Haitian Baptist Church in Norwich, where members filled the church, singing and praying during the first Sabbath service since Tuesday’s earthquake.
The mood was joyous despite the fact that many of the congregation members are still waiting to hear from their families back in Haiti.
During the service, Norwich Emergency Services and the Red Cross set up a communication center outside. Inside, a database helped church members find their family members.
Najean’s husband was able to find her without the database, but contacts like this are what the volunteers are hoping to be able to make.
“I can’t even fathom what it’s like to not know where your family is and if your family is alive or injured,” Sue Rochester-Bolen, of the Red Cross, said.
