Oops, Jose Offerman did it again. The former major league all-star has been busted for a second on-field assault, and the Dominican winter league has banned him for life.
He threw a punch at an umpire during an heated argument in a Dominican winter league game this weekend, the Associated Press reports.
Stadium security detained him and took him to a police station to wait until the end of the game to see if the umpire would press charges. On Monday, the league said they decided soon after the attack that he would not be welcome in the club's ballparks.
Fernando Ravelo, the general manager of the Tigers, said the club will try to appeal the ban against Offerman, who had a contract with the club for next season.
If that who fist-throwning incident sounds familiar, it's because something similar happened here on Aug, 14 2007.
Offerman was playing for the Long Island Ducks in Bridgeport against the local Bluefish when pitcher Matt Beech hit him with a fastball.
Offerman charged the mound, with his bat, and swung at least twice, striking Beech and the catcher, John Nathans, who has since sued for nearly $5 million in damages. He was given probation and ordered to get anger management treatment, as well as pay the medical expenses for Beech and Nathans, the Associated Press reported.
