Case for Officer Charged in Fatal Crash Moved

The cruiser collided with a car, which then rammed through the brick wall of a church.

Hartford Police Officer Taikwon Dudley has been arrested in connection with an early-morning crash in July that killed a 50-year-old Hartford man and the case has been moved to New Britain Part A.

The crash happened at Albany Avenue and Woodland Street on July 13, when Dudley was responding to the area to assist other officers who were trying to take an armed person in to custody, police said.

The cruiser struck Anthony Mansfield’s car and sent it into a church. Mansfield was critically injured and died a week later, on July 20.

The Hartford Police Accident Reconstruction Unit and the Hartford Police Internal Affairs Division investigated, with cooperation of the Connecticut State Police and New Britain State’s Attorney’s Office and Dudley has been charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, reckless driving, traveling too fast for conditions and failure to obey a traffic signal.

Dudley was arrested on Thursday, Oct. 18, released on a written promise to appear and was in Hartford Superior Court on Oct. 25.

The prosecutor said his Hartford office has a conflict of interest and the case was moved from Hartford to New Britain. The next court date is Nov. 7.

“I continue to express my condolences to the Mansfield family in this difficult time. I thank them for their patience in allowing us to complete a complex investigation as thoroughly and completely as possible,” Hartford Police Chief James C. Rovella said.
