Two police officers were sent to the hospital after a stolen car sped through a stop sign and plowed into their police cruiser in New Haven, authorities said.
According to police, the officers had pulled up to the intersection of Howard Avenue and Rosette Street just after midnight Wednesday when an Acura Integra drove through a stop sign, hitting the cruiser.
Police said the cruiser was pushed up onto the curb, where it hit a utility box. The Acura spun around and mowed down part of a fence outside a Howard Avenue home. Both cars were heavily damaged and needed to be towed from the scene, according to police.
The driver ran from the scene. A police K-9 unit tried unsuccessfully to track him, but the suspect got away, police said.
Police said the Acura made no effort to stop and had its headlights turned off. After the crash, investigators found that the car’s ignition had been tampered with the steering column was cracked. Police said it appeared to be an unreported stolen car.
EMTs responded to treat the officers, who were then taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Both officers were released within a few hours and will return to work next week, police said.
