1 Arrested, 1 Hospitalized After Boating Accident in Haddam

A 23-year-old Bethany woman and a Hamden man were injured during boating accident on the Connecticut River in Haddam on Sunday evening and police arrested the man they said said was driving the vessel.

Emergency crews responded to the river near the Midway Marina around 6 p.m. after receiving reports that someone was caught by the propeller of a 26-year-old power boat.

When they arrived, they found Stephanie Ryan, 23-year-old of Bethany, suffering from severe cuts to her legs.

An ambulance brought Ryan to Hartford Hospital, where she is listed in stable condition.

Ronald Russo, the owner of the boat, was also injured, but refused medical treatment at the scene.

Officials from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said the two victims jumped off the boat to swim in the river and Joseph Borruso, 22, of Woodbridge, tried to move the vessel closer to the swimmers.

Environmental Conservation police charged Joseph Borruso with first-degree reckless operation of a vessel while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Six people were on the boat, officials said, and Ronald and Joseph Russo are cousins.
