“Out of the Darkness” Walk Held in East Hartford

September is National Suicide Prevention month, and on Saturday, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention hosted an "out of the darkness" walk at Great River Park in East Hartford.

More than 800 people came out to raise money to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's education and support programs.

Organizers hope walks like this help de-stigmatizes suicide.

"A lot of people have the misinterpretation that if we talk about it, it's going to put the idea in people's heads when we find actually it's the exact opposite. The more we talk about it, the more lives we can save," American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Board Member Sherri Brown said.

So far, more than $75,000 has been raised and donations will be accepted through the end of December.

If you or someone you love needs help, you can call the National Suicide Prevention lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
