6 Children Transported from Mystic Campground to Hospital

Six children were transported to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital after getting sick at Seaport RV Resort & Campground in Mystic, but it's not clear what made them ill.

Emergency officials responded to 45 Campground Road at 1:38 p.m. on Tuesday and called for additional ambulance from Groton, Mystic River, North Stonington and Stonington.

Nine people -- eight children and one adult -- were evaluated after vomiting and complaining of a scratchy throat, difficulty breathing and abdominal pain, officials said.

Don Pickett, of North Providence, Rhode Island was at the pool with his wife and three children.

“My wife and I were sitting on the pool and we got a whiff of chlorine and my wife started choking," he said.

Tests of the air and pool water came up negative for contaminants and officials from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to the scene shortly after the children were transported. They said staff did not detect any gaseous odors or obvious issues with the water.

“There was yellow water or fluid coming into the pool where the kids were and all the kids got sick. They couldn’t breathe, they were choking," Pickett said.

The pool's filter system is shut down until a contractor can it.

The Department of Public Health was also notified.
