Driver Accused of Leaving Scene of Fatal Waterbury Crash

A pedestrian is dead after a crash in Waterbury Sunday, and the driver faces charges after fleeing the scene, according to Waterbury police.

Police said the pedestrian, identified as 74-year-old Daniel Hernandez, was crossing the street in the area of 450 West Main Street when he was struck by a car. He was taken to Saint Mary's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said that the driver, identified as 32-year-old Victor Collado-Paez, initially fled the scene and later returned. He was arrested and charged with felony evading responsibility and driving without a license.

Collado-Paez was released on a $50,000 bond and is next due in court on Dec. 21.

The crash remains under investigation.
