Pepper Spray Discharged Inside of New Haven School

Emergency crews were called to a school in New Haven after pepper spray was discharged inside.

A student discharged the pepper spray in an isolated part of the Edgewood Creative Thinking through STEAM Magnet School, which is for students in kindergarten through eighth grade, according to New Haven Public School officials.

NHPS COO Will Clark told NBC Connecticut the incident was limited to one classroom which was evacuated. Police and fire crews responded and helped air it out.

One child was taken to the hospital as a precaution but has since been released with no lingering issues.

The rest of the school day continued without interruption, Clark said. Parents of children in the affected classroom were contacted and given the option of taking their child home early.

School officials are working with school security and authorities to investigate.
