Contractor falls from Roof of Nathan Hale House in Coventry

A contractor fell off the roof at the Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry on Wednesday morning and LifeStar helicopter transported him to Hartford Hospital, where he is being treated for injuries.

Officials said the man fell around 20 feet and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Emergency officials responded to the house at 2299 South Street around 10:35 a.m. and the scene was clear as of 11:11 a.m.

The house, a state landmark, was the birthplace of Capt. Nathan Hale, a Revolutionary War hero who disguised himself as a Dutch teacher, and went behind enemy lines on a volunteer mission for General George Washington.

Hale spent a week collecting information on the British troops, but was captured while returning to provide the information to the American side.

He is responsible for uttering the famous quote, "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country," before the British hanged him as a spy at the age of 21.
