Man Accused of Crashing Pickup Into East Hartford Home Arrested

A man who is accused of attempting to break into his ex-wife's house in Glastonbury and then crashing his truck into a home in East Hartford early Tuesday morning has been arrested.

Glastonbury police said they received a report from someone on Denslow Road around 2:15 a.m. that her ex-husband, later identified as 52-year-old Charles Walker, was attempting to gain entry to her home.

An officer responded to the area and found Walker's pick-up truck in the neighborhood. Police said the officer attempted to stop the pick-up truck, but it fled and engaged the officer in a short pursuit around the neighborhood.

The officer broke off the pursuit and the pick-up truck continued north on Prospect Street onto Forbes Street in East Hartford, authorities said.

A short time later, East Hartford police notified Glastonbury police that a truck had crashed into a home on Forbes Street near Maple Street, according to police.

Crews found a pick-up that had crashed into the living room of a historic house, one that was built in the 1700s.

The residents of the house Walker is accused of crashing into were sleeping in a different part of the home when the accident happened and were not injured.

"We were in bed and there was a loud bang and the whole house shook," Daniel Werkheiser said.

“I heard the screeching of brakes and then it went into the house,” Kathy Werkheiser, a resident, said. “I said, ‘It went into the house.’ And my husband said, ‘That was that.’ I said, ‘Uh a car or something went through the house.’ He came down and there it was in our living room.”

Kathy called 911 and Daniel went to check to see if anyone was hurt, but no one else was there.

The house suffered exterior damage but no major structural damage, according to fire officials. The house was once an inn and has been passed down through generations.

Investigators said the suspected operator, later identified as Walker, was found a short time later and was taken into custody in East Hartford.

Glastonbury police took Walker into custody and he is facing charges including criminal attempt to commit burglary, interfering with an officer/resisting arrest, engaging police in pursuit and illegal operation of a motor vehicle under suspension.

Walker was transported to Saint Francis Medical Center and is in police custody, officers said. He is being held on $100,000 bond for the incident.

Police said Walker is also being charged with a PRAWN warrant for violation of probation that resulted from violating a restraining order. This charge has a $35,000 bond.
