Pilot Killed in Danbury Crash

The plane was registered in Kansas.

The pilot of a single-engine plane is dead after crashing into a neighborhood just shy of the Danbury Airport on Sunday evening.

The plane just missed 58 Wooster Heights Road, where a 91-year-old woman was home, sitting right next to the window and balancing her checkbook. She was unharmed when the plane landed in her front yard, but Peter Woodsmall, 61, of Kansas, was pronounced dead at the scene. He had just become a grandfather, officials said.

The single engine Cirrus was approaching the airport when it lost contact with the tower around 8:10 p.m., Federal Aviation Administration officials said.

Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board and FAA are looking into the cause of the crash. Weather was calm at the time. There was no fire nor fuel leak as a result of the crash. A new conference will be held in Danbury on Monday afternoon.

The Associated Press reports that the plane was a single-engine propeller-driven aircraft -- a Cirrus SR-22. The plane is registered to Cirrwood LLC., at 5650 High Drive in Mission Hills, Kansas.

This is the second crash this month involving a plane trying to land or take off from Danbury Airport.

Earlier in October a single-engine plane crashed in the front lawn of a Ridgefield family's home. The pilot walked away from the crash in that incident.
