Police Find Parents of Toddler Found Wandering Alone in New London

Police have found the parents of a toddler who was found wandering alone in New London on Monday morning.

Officers said a motorist saw a 2- to 3-year-old boy wandering by himself near Montauk Avenue and Willetts Avenue around 4 a.m.

The motorist immediately stopped and attended to the toddler. When the motorist couldn't find anyone around, she contacted police, authorities said.

Police officers and members of the fire department responded to the scene. The toddler was transported to Lawrence+Memorial Hospital for an evaluation as a precaution, officials said.

The state Department of Children and Families was also contacted.

Emergency service personnel initiated a search of the area.

After an extensive search, police said the toddler's parents were found asleep at their home on Crescent Street.

According to officers, the toddler had let himself out of a secure door without his parents' knowledge.

"It was apparent that the parents had been proactive in their attempts to prevent the child from getting out of the house,"authorities said in a release.

The child and his parents were reunited at the hospital.

Police said no arrests have been made, however, the investigation remains active.
