One Person Injured After Car Crashes Through Milford Building

A driver faces DUI charges after hitting a woman and crashing into two stores in Milford, according to the Milford Police Department.

Police said they responded to The Crushed Grape on Melba Street just after 6 p.m. for reports of a car into the building.  Investigators discovered a pickup had first hit the corner of the nearby Dollar General store before veering through the parking lot, hitting a woman, then crashing into the package store.

The woman who was hit was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver, identified as 58-year-old Kenneth Longfield – was arrested and faces charges of DUI, assault, evading responsibility and reckless endangerment. Police said Longfield failed a breathalyzer test.

The Crushed Grape was open at the time and those inside had to scramble out of the way.

“Some people were hit by glass that was sprayed but nothing significant," said Milford Police spokesman Michael DeVito.

“At the time, 6 o’clock, businesses are still open. There’s still people in the store. In that retrospect, you could say they were rather fortunate," he added.

This is the second time a car has smashed into the Crushed Grape. In 2015, a small SUV charged into the store after apparently the driver mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake.

Crews were rushing to make repairs for the store in time for Super Bowl Sunday, which is a big day for them.
