4 Hospitalized, Including Baby, After Meriden Crash

Several people, including a baby, were taken to the hospital Friday afternoon after four cars collided on Route 15 northbound near the intersection of Interstate 691 northbound in Meriden, according to state police.

State police from Troop I barracks in Bethany responded to the serious crash at about 1:40 p.m. on Friday. Troopers discovered a pickup truck and three cars in the right center lane of Route 15 north just before exit 68NE and that an infant was trapped in the back seat of a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Two other people in that car also required immediate medical attention, so LifeStar was called to the scene of what police described as a serious crash. The driver, Dave Harris, 39, of Bridgeport,  and baby were airlifted from Mid State Hospital to Hartford Hospital by LifeStar and the front seat passenger, Jocelyn Harris, 34, of Bridgeport, was taken to Mid State Hospital.

Two of the vehicles were involved in a minor crash in the right center lane. The third vehicle, which contained the parties who were injured, including the baby, slowed down and stopped close to the rear bumper of the second car, state police said. The fourth car didn't stop in time and crashed into the back of the car, causing a chain reaction of fender benders with the other cars involved. The car with the baby inside spun 180 degrees upon impact and stopped, facing the opposite direction.

Latoya Fraser Andrews, 37, of West Hampstead, New York, the driver in the first vehicle, a 2006 Volvo, was also taken to Mid State Hospital to be evaluated. The drivers in the second and fourth cars weren't hurt and stayed at the scene.

Route 15 north was shut down in the area of exit 68W and then one lane reopened, meaning the right and center lanes were closed through rush hour Saturday night, according to state police. The highway has since reopened.

There has been no word on the conditions of those injured.
