Prison Inmates To Get Access to Tablets

Prison inmates are getting access to computer tablets in an effort to help their education, keep them connected to family, and reduce noise and violence in prison.

Connecticut this summer plans to join a growing number of prison systems in providing inmates with tablets. The devices are not hooked to the internet but will be preloaded with e-books, educational videos and games.

Officials say the devices will be provided free by the manufacturer, which makes money by charging for email, phone calls, and game or music downloads.

Questions have been raised about whether the tablets could lead prisons to decrease in-person visitation and whether there is enough regulation of private providers to prevent price gouging.
