A private memorial service was held at St. Anthony Church in Hartford for a Middletown woman who was lost at sea during a fishing trip with her son a month ago.
Linda Carman has been missing since September, when the boat she and her son were on sank during the weekend of Sept. 17.
Her son, Nathan Carman, was rescued by a freighter about 100 miles off the coast of Martha's Vineyard eight days later.
"I wish desperately that my mom was rescued. I hope that she will be found," he said after the church service. "As difficult as this is, I'm glad that family and friends had a chance and that friends came together to remember my mom to support each other in this very difficult time."
Carman said he's grateful to the friends and family members who attended the service."
"I'm glad that many of my mom's friends chose to attend. And I think the service was a good time for us to come together and support one another," he said.
An attorney for Carman told the Hartford Courant that friends and family were invited to a private service on Wednesday morning.
But Linda Carman's sisters released a statement questioning the memorial service with the sinking still under investigation by multiple police agencies and did not attend the services on Wednesday.
"I wish very much that my whole family would have come together to pray for my mom and I made sure that they were invited, that they had an opportunity," Nathan Carman said.
A memorial Mass was originally scheduled at a church in West Hartford, but church officials said it was canceled.
