A museum honoring Connecticut state heroine Prudence Crandall is holding special public tours as part of Black History Month.
The Prudence Crandall Museum in Canterbury will open Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museum usually is only open in the winter by appointment.
Crandall was a 19th century educator who opened her academy in Canterbury to young black women. The move outraged the community and led the state legislature in 1833 to pass a law making the school illegal. The law was repealed five years later.
Crandall was arrested and spent a night in jail. She faced three court trials before her case was dismissed in 1834. She later closed the school after a mob attack.
The site is now a National Historic Landmark.
