Public Hearings Planned on Proposed Fare Increases

Connecticut's Department of Transportation plans to hold a series of hearings across the state to discuss proposed rail and bus fare increases.

DOT is proposing a 5 percent fare increase on the New Haven commuter rail line, including the New Canaan, Danbury and Waterbury ranches and Shore Line East. It would take effect Dec. 1, generating about $5.9 million to help cover budget cuts.

On the New Haven Line, that proposed increase would be combined with a previously scheduled 1 percent fare hike that was imposed to help pay for the new M-8 rail cars.

DOT is also considering a 25-increase in the standard one-way fare on the state-wide CTtransit bus services, going from $1.50 to $1.75.

Six hearings are planned throughout the state next month to gauge public opinion.
