Opposing Rallies About Abortion Debate Held at State Capitol

In the wake of Alabama passing one of the strictest abortion laws in the country and Connecticut passing a bill that could impact advertising for pregnancy care centers and force them to close, opposing rallies about abortion were held at the State Capitol on Tuesday.

Abortion rights advocates held a "Stop the Bans" Day of Action for Reproductive Rights rally. It is a demonstration against the states that are passing laws restricting women's reproductive rights, according to a press release.

At the same time, anti-abortion advocates held a rally at the opposite side of the Capitol. They are defending the state's pregnancy care centers.

Anti-abortion advocates said Connecticut's House of Representatives recently passed the Anti-Pregnancy Center Bill. The bill gives the Attorney General of Connecticut the oversight and authority to advertise pregnancy care centers.

The anti-abortion advocates said the centers serve hundreds of women who are seeking assistance and an alternative to abortion.

According to anti-abortion advocates, the litigation created by the bill, even if using false claims, could easily put the pregnancy care centers out of business. They are hoping to stop the bill from becoming a law in the State Senate.

The rallies in Connecticut are just two of the hundreds of rallies being held across the country on Tuesday.

The rallies also come after Alabama lawmakers passed the most stringent abortion legislation in the nation last week, which makes performing an abortion a felony in nearly all cases.

The law makes performing an abortion at any stage of pregnancy a felony punishable by 10 to 99 years or life in prison for the provider. The only exception is when the woman's health is at serious risk.

The bill was signed into law on Wednesday.
