Residents File Suit for Damages in Middletown Explosion

Telemundo San Antonio

Dozens of homeowners have filed a lawsuit in the wake of the explosion at the Kleen Energy Plant in Middletown that killed 6 in February.

A lawsuit was filed on Wednesday on behalf of 35 people whose homes were affected by the blast.

Twelve defendants are named in the suit, Including the owners of the plant.

Attorneys for the plaintiffs said the homeowners are not only dealing with the physical damage to their homes, but also property devaluation and higher insurance premiums.

In the meantime, a public hearing began on Tuesday in New Britain to determine whether the plant can open next June.

The Connecticut Siting Council heard from Middletown residents and municipal leaders, many of whom are unhappy with the plant owner's response to the February explosion. The hearing focused on what additional protections would be put in place if the plant were allowed to reopen.

Council members said a decision will be made in the near future.
