Residents Take Advantage of Free Flu Clinic in Windsor

For Stanley Gryskiewicz and his family, avoiding the flu bug is a big deal.

“We’ve been getting the flu shot since we had kids. It’s just one of those important things that you should do,” said Stanley Gryskiewicz.

The Windsor residents took advantage of the free clinic offered in the town of Windsor. Both of his kids were brave enough to do it with no issues.

“It felt like I had a little pressure, but it didn’t hurt that much,” said Stanley Gryskiewicz.

“I would rather get the flu shot than to get the flu. I think it’s definitely worth it,” said Abigail Gryskiewicz.

But according to researchers at the University of Chicago who surveyed 1,200 people nationwide, they found 41 percent had no intentions of getting the flu vaccine this year because of the side effects.

For Stanley Gryskiewicz and his family, avoiding the flu bug is a big deal.

Windsor’s Public Health nurse Sharon Enot disagrees.

“The vaccine that we give is a non-live virus vaccine. So, it can not give you the flu,” said Enot. “If someone does get the flu after getting the flu shot shortly after, most likely were exposed to it out in the community.”

Enot is the town’s public health nurse. She said it’s risky to go without a flu shot when you look at the number of people who died from flu-related complications last season. The Centers for Disease Control says 80,000 people across the country died, including 154 of those right here in Connecticut,

In addition to getting the flu shot, Enot encourages everyone to be active, exercise, eat well, get plenty of rest and wash your hands.

The CDC recommends that anyone over the age of six months receive a flu shot sooner than later because it takes two weeks for the flu shot to take effect.
