2 Injured in Head-on Crash on Route 44 in Barkhamsted

Two drivers were hurt in a head-on crash on Route 44 in Barkhamsted Wednesday morning and one of them has serious injuries, according to state police.

Fire officials said a Honda and Subaru crashed around 6:15 a.m. on Route 44 near Dew Road. Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles and firefighters had to free them.

"The extrication took a lot of work because the dashboards had rolled down onto their legs, pinning them in the vehicles, so the crews did a great job of rolling the dash, moving it away from the legs, so we could get them out," Chief James Shanley, of the Pleasant Valley Fire Department, said.

LifeStar, a medical transport helicopter, was requested but could not fly because of dense fog.

Both drivers, who were not identified, were alert on scene and taken to area hospitals.

State police are investigating the accident. It is unclear if weather was a factor.

The road was closed for about two hours while crews cleaned up and police investigated, but it has reopened.

Ice is expected to melt by this afternoon as temperatures rise into the 50s, but a snowstorm is moving in for tomorrow.
