1 Dead After Serious Crash on I-95 in East Haven

One person has died after a serious crash on Interstate 95 involving multiple vehicles Saturday morning.

State police the accident occurred just past exit 51 in East Haven around 11:12 a.m. A tractor trailer and five other cars were involved.

Police say all six vehicles were traveling in the center lane of three. The tractor trailer, driven by Kevin Anderson, 64, of Brighton, Mass. was the last car in the line. The first five vehicles slowed for heavy traffic ahead approximately 100-feet south of the exit 51 entrance ramp.

The truck struck the vehicle immediately in front of it, a 2014 Toyota Venza. The force of the collision caused a chain reaction, pushing the Venza into the 2015 Land Rover in front of it, which in turn struck a 2007 Honda Civic, which rear-ended a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe, which hit a 2007 Ford F150.

The Toyota Venza was then pushed into the cement jersey barrier in the right shoulder. A backseat passenger, identified as Adriana Catana, 68, of Trumbull, sustained fatal injuries. The four other occupants of the vehicle were transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The occupants of the Land Rover were also transported to Yale New-Haven Hospital for evaluation of possible injuries. Anderson, the occupants of the Civic, the Santa Fe, and the F150 were not injured.

The road was partially closed for several hours while police investigated. It reopened around 2:45 p.m.

This crash is under investigation by Connecticut State Police Troop G. There is no word on charges or citations at this time.
