Suspect in Shooting Outside Hartford Walmart Charged With Murder

A 34-year-old New Britain man who was shot outside the Wal-Mart at 495 Flatbush Ave. in Hartford just after 4 p.m. on Monday has died and police have charged another man with murder. 

The victim, 34-year-old Larry Williams, of New Britain, was shot three times in the stomach and was transported to Hartford Hospital, where he was rushed into surgery.

He was listed in critical condition on Monday night and police said he died around 4 a.m. on Tuesday.

Just after 7:30 p.m. on Monday, 26-year-old Kenneth Reid, of Windsor, called police and said he was involved in the shooting, turned himself in and said told officers he shot the victim in self-defense, police said. 

He also told police the shooting was a result of a marijuana deal "gone wrong."

Reid told police that Williams used a shotgun on him and it was in Reid's white Saturn View SUV, according to police. He also directed officers to his cousin's apartment on Farmington Avenue to find his 9 millimeter gun.

Officers seized it and said Reid has a valid firearms permit.

He has been charged with murder and bond was set at $1.5 million. He is due in court today.

Witnesses at the scene said they heard multiple gun shots in the parking lot.Police said they expect more arrests and charges are possible.
