Skakel Attorney, Mickey Sherman, Pleads Guilty to Taxes Charges

Michael Skakel's former attorney is in trouble with the law because of $400,000 in taxes.

Michael "Mickey" Sherman, who represented the Kennedy cousin during the Martha Moxley murder trial, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor tax charges on Wednesday.

He appeared in Bridgeport court on Wednesday on two misdemeanor counts.

Defense attorney William Dow III told The Associated Press that Sherman filed accurate returns for 2001 and 2002 but failed to make timely payments to the IRS .

Sherman could face up to two years in prison and a $200,000 fine. Dow, who once represented Gov. John Rowland in a corruption scandal that jailed Rowland for nearly a year, said he was hoping Sherman would be spared prison time.

When asked why his client neglected to pay the taxes, Dow said,“He has substantial personal and family obligations and was focusing on his practice."

Prosecutors said that while Sherman failed to pay his taxes, he continued paying for a country club membership and bought Jeeps for his two children.

Sherman’s effectiveness as an attorney is also coming into question.

He represented Skakel in 2002, when he was convicted in the 1975 fatal beating of his neighbor, Martha Moxley, in Greenwich. Skakel plans to file an appeal saying Sherman didn’t represent him well.
