A few snowflakes here and there will surprise no hearty New Englander. But 8 inches of snow? That shocked us all. Even the pros didn’t see it coming.
The snow squalls came between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., quite inconvenient for people getting off work in the early evening. In some places, the frozen flakes fell at a rate of up to 4 inches per hour.
Most of the state received no snow at all, but parts of Waterbury received 6 inches, and the town of Washington reported 8 inches of snow.
The snowy surprise caused many collisions and caused school officials to delay open schools for Friday morning.
State police say they responded to dozens of collisions along Interstate 84 Friday morning, and most schools in the area decided to open at least 90 minutes late to give crews time to clear the roads.
