Parents of the Mabelle B. Avery Middle School in Somers students received a letter on Thursday about a student making a "serious verbal threat."
Administrators said they're taking the threat seriously.
Officials learned of the threat late Wednesday afternoon, the Hartford Courant reports and the letter said the student's threat was directed toward himself and others and it “caused a major disruption to our school environment affecting students across all grade levels."
Staff will be keeping a watchful eye, the principal wrote, and asked parents to do the same.
No information was provided on what that threat was or what happened to the student who made it.
A parent, who did not want to be identified, said some parents have chosen to keep their children home from school for the day.
Supt. Maynard M. Suffredini Jr. said the situation involved one student and a rumor mill that quickly spread.

While the police were called to help in the investigation, that does not mean it was a credible threat, he said.
The school is safe and the administration acted quickly and handled the situation properly.
While some parents chose to keep their children home today, the school is " a full school."
