Source of Bad Gasoline Located

The gas damaged hundreds of cars along the shoreline.

The state Department of Consumer Protection has found the source of a contaminated batch of gasoline.

The fuel was linked to a single fuel storage tank, Tank 31M, at the terminal located at 134 Forbes Avenue in New Haven, according to Commissioner William Rubenstein. The tank has been put out-of-service while the department investigates how it was contaminated.

"We're still doing testing, but we believe that it's some sort of water contamination," said Rubenstein.

The tank's owner, Magellan Midstream Partners, is conducting its own investigation. In a statement, the company said, "We have taken additional precautionary steps to ensure that gasoline blended with ethanol leaving our facilities meets all appropriate standards."

The investigation into the tainted fuel started after the Department of Consumer Protection received more than a hundred reports from drivers having problems with their vehicles due to bad gasoline. Drivers who filled up at stations in the New Haven area to Montville reported problems.

The Department believes the contaminated fuel has been removed from the system at those stations.
