Staples High School Wrestling Coach Arrested After Police Find Cocaine in Car: PD

The Staples High School wrestling coach was arrested early Saturday when officers pulled him over in Westport after observing him drive erratically and found cocaine on him, police said.

Westport police stopped David Bernstein, 28, of Fairfield, around 1:15 a.m. Saturday after witnessing his vehicle cross the double yellow lines on Post Road East, police said.

While police were arresting him on an outstanding Bridgeport Superior Court warrant for a failure to appear charge, an officer noticed a small clear plastic bag of what appeared to be cocaine in a cigarette pack in the car, police said.

The substance was confirmed to be cocaine and police additionally charged Bernstein with illegal possession of a narcotic.

He posted a $1,000 bond for the narcotic charge and $2,500 bond for the failure to appear arrest. Bernstein is due in Norwalk Superior Court on Dec. 15.
