State Approves Acquisition of St. Vincent's Medical Center

Hartford HealthCare's purchase of St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport has been approved by the state.

The ruling Thursday by the Connecticut Office of Health Strategy brings St. Vincent's into a network that also includes Hartford Hospital, the Hospital of Central Connecticut, William Backus Hospital in Norwich, MidState Medical Center in Meriden and Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington.

The approval comes with several conditions, including the spending of $135 million for equipment upgrades and other capital improvements at St. Vincent's over the next seven years.

The deal, which affects about 3,200 employees, includes St. Vincent's 473-bed community teaching hospital, a 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Westport, a large multispecialty provider group, and special needs services for adults and children.

Both organizations expect to complete the transaction by Oct. 1.
