State Conservation Officers to Police On-Water All Weekend

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is stepping up on-water patrols to target boaters under the influence.

The increased activity by conservation officers coincides with Operation Dry Water, a national campaign and event that coordinates with the U.S. Coast Guard and state and local law enforcement, to patrol along Long Island Sound and Connecticut's lakes, ponds and rivers to ensure boater safety.

The goal of the operation is to heighten awareness of the danger of boating under the influence and provide a more visible presence to reduce the number of alcohol and drug-related accidents and fatalities.

The Independence Day holiday weekend is targeted because it is known for its fatal boating accidents due to alcohol use, a news release states.
