Suspect in Windsor Locks Turned Himself In to Hartford Police: Police

Police said the victim was dating the suspect's ex-girlfriend.

A suspect in a Windsor Locks homicide is in custody in Hartford after turning himself in to a police officer and a detective at the Hartford Public Safety complex on Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

Windsor Locks police said they received a 911 call around 10:50 a.m. and found a shooting victim just outside the doorway of 131 Old Colony Road. The man, identified as 35-year-old Leroy Jefferson, had been shot several times, including in the head. He was pronounced dead on scene.

As the investigation into the man’s death began, Windsor Locks Police said they were looking for 38-year-old Antwon Barnes and said he should be considered armed and dangerous. They were also looking for a green 1998 Nissan Pathfinder with CT registration 00LAJX.

Investigators said Barnes confronted the victim in the hallway of a building and shot the victim multiple times. Police said Barnes also pointed the gun at a woman the victim was with and pulled the trigger, but the weapon did not fire.

Police say Jefferson was dating Barnes' ex-girlfriend, who Barnes has a child with.

Just before 12:30 p.m., a man walked up to the Hartford Public Safety complex at 12:28 p.m., asked to speak with and officer and a detective outside and identified himself, Lt. Paul Cicero, of Hartford Police, said.

“The detective and officer recognized the fact that that name was an individual wanted – a person of interest in a Windsor Locks homicide. They took him into custody peacefully,” Cicero said.

Windsor Locks Police said that Barnes had a duffel bag with him that contained a gun.

While the search for Barnes was ongoing, Windsor Locks Public Schools were placed in what they call a “code yellow” lockdown, which allows students to move about their day within the building. Schools were not allowing any entry into the school buildings and said they expect a normal dismissal.
