Suspect Dead After Police-Involved Shooting in New Milford: State Police

A man who was uncooperative when officers responded to a disturbance call in New Milford Monday night is dead after a police-involved shooting, according to state police.

New Milford police responded to Outlook Road around 4:50 p.m. after receiving a disturbance call and a man who came out of the residence was holding a shotgun, ignored officers' requests to talk and ran into the woods with the gun, state police said.

Police and K9 units searched the woods but the man came out of the woods on his own, still carrying the weapon, and approached officers, according to state police.

A New Milford officer fired at least once and struck the suspect after he refused to drop the gun, Connecticut State Police said.

The suspect was taken to Danbury Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police have identified the suspect as 62-year-old Kostatinos Sfaelos, of New Milford, and the officer as 33-year-old Christopher Hayes, who has been with the department since 2014.

Connecticut State Police have assumed the investigation and the Western District Major Crimes team is handling the investigation.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy.
