First State Rep. Victor Cuevas, (D-Waterbury), was arrested on Oct. 21, following a car accident on I-84 in Waterbury and now his son is facing charges after his arrest in a government building in a separate voyeurism case on Tuesday.
Cuevas was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drunk driving, and was later arrested on charges of drunk driving and following too closely.
Then, just Tuesday, his son, also named Victor Cuevas was arrested in the Legislative Office Building in Hartford, on charges of voyeuristic recording of another person, making a false statement, and disorderly conduct.
The two have back to back court dates later this month: Rep. Cuevas on Nov. 24 and his son on Nov. 25.
The younger Cuevas worked in the mail room of the Senate Democrats. Upon news of the arrest, his employment was terminated.
“Everybody is innocent until proven guilty and it’s sad to see that this is happening in Waterbury especially," said Ruben Rodriguez, a Waterbury resident who is also the chairman of the Latino National Coalition of Connecticut. "It could happen in any city but it hurts me more that it’s happening in Waterbury.”
Rep. Cuevas was stripped of his vice-chairmanship of the Labor and Public Employees Committee by Speaker Brendan Sharkey following his arrest.
Rodriguez, who says he's had a good working relationship with Cuevas in the past, says incidents like those involving a family, may raise concerns of many in the city.
“Hopefully he can go and with these challenges move forward from this but it does have a negative impact to the community of Waterbury and then later it has to decide what they’re going to do about this.”
