Crews Battle Fire at Stratford Chemical Company

Stratford firefighters battled a fire at a chemical company late Tuesday night and one firefighter went to the hospital to be treated for a facial injury.

Dispatchers received a 911 call at 10:25 p.m. about heavy smoke coming from the roof of Total Petrochemicals and Refining, at 105 Ontario Street, and told the caller to evacuate the building.

One firefighter suffered a facial injury and was transported to the emergency room at Bridgeport Hospital and was released after being treated.

The fire was under control as of 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday, but firefighters remained at the scene until 3:12 a.m.

The Fairfield County Hazmat team was called in to decontaminate firefighters because some of the equipment at the facility gathers dust from the chemicals, according to the fire chief.

The Stratford fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
