Suspect in 1996 West Hartford Sex Assault in Custody

A man suspected of a sexual assault at a West Hartford reservoir in 1996 was taken into custody in New York.  

Deputies from the Clinton County Sheriffs Office in New York and members of the United States Border Patrol arrested William Newton, 50, of Manchester, Conn. as a fugitive from justice around 8:30 a.m. on Monday.

Newton was wanted by the West Hartford Police Department on an outstanding warrant for first-degree sexual assault.

He is suspected of sexually assaulting someone at knifepoint at Reservoir #6 on Albany Avenue in West Hartford.

Newtown was arraigned in the Town of Champlain Court and remanded to the Clinton County Correctional Facility, waived extradition and will be brought back to Connecticut. 

Bond was set at $75,000.
