U.S. Marshals have arrested a suspect in three bank robberies in New Haven and possibly one in New Jersey.
U.S. Marshals took Lenwood Saunders, 43, into custody on Wednesday. He is accused of robbing TD Bank at 994 Chapel St, on Sept 14 and Chase Bank at 234 Church St. on Sept. 18.
Police said he was apprehended after robbing First Niagara Bank at 195 Church St. on Oct. 16.
During all three robberies, Saunders passed a note to the tellers demanding cash and told them he was armed, police said.
When police apprehended Saunders, he had several driver’s licenses, none of which were his own, approximately $280 and a small amount of heroin, police said.
Detectives are working with the Newark Police Department in New Jersey because they think he was responsible for a robbery at a TD Bank there on Sept. 29.
Before his scheduled arraignment, Saunders was taken to the hospital, so his court date was continued for Friday.
The judge found probable cause and ordered Saunders held on $150,000 for each of the three robberies and $35,000 for a probation violation.
