Out of Time – Tax Day 2009

The kings and queens of procrastination were out in full force Wednesday. Tax Day 2009 saw plenty of last minute filers who hit the post office at all hours of the night.

"I owe. Since the government takes forever to pay me my money, I figured I’d make them wait," said Laurie Bonilla of New Britain.

In Hartford, postal workers hit the street with mail bins, collecting tax forms as people drove by.

"They can stop, drop it and go," said Scott Daniels, a postal worker.

According to the IRS more people are e-filing their taxes than ever before. Even so, plenty still file the old fashioned way. Hartford police set up detours to keep last minute filers from clogging city streets.

"It’s a long line, but not as bad as I thought it would be," said one woman driving by.

It’s true. Postal workers say the crowds were the thinnest they’ve ever been. It’s a big reason why fewer post offices are staying open until midnight.

The post office at Bradley Airport was open however and had a line of people waiting at 11:45pm

"I owe. I figured I might as well hold onto my money as long as I can," said John Antolini of Southington.
