Teacher Layoffs at Norwich Schools

Pink slips for dozens of teachers in Norwich public schools -- that's the word from the New London Day.

The Board of Education voted Thursday to layoff 71 teachers in anticipation of major cuts to the district's 2010-2011 budget, according to the Day.

The list of teachers on the chopping block was attached to the board's agenda.  The district has a $66.2 million budget for the 2010-2011 school year but it also calls for a 5.9% increase in spending.

Board members expressed frustration with the budget crisis and called the move "detrimental", according to the Day.

Board Chairman, Charles Jaskiewicz, told the Day these cuts are the worst he has seen in the city school system in 20 years.
