A man was killed when a freight train and car collided along Lillibridge Road in Plainfield on Friday morning.
The collision happened around 7:52 a.m. near Route 12. The Providence and Worcester Railroad Company reported the crash. One man was in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Plainfield Police.
Providence and Worcester Railroad Co. Vice President Frank Rogers said the crash involved a light-engine train that was heading southbound from Plainfield to Old Saybrook, where it was going to pick up loading cars before heading to Clinton to service a customer there.
Plainfield called LifeStar but the helicopter could not make it to the site because they were tied up on with another call. The call was then transferred Life Flight out of Mass but Plainfield called it off.
Police said the man is a local resident but have not released his name, pending notification of his family.
The Providence and Worcester Railroad is a regional freight railroad operating in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York.
The trains transport items including cars, construction material, iron and steel products, chemicals, coal, ethanol, lumber, cement, food and oils.
