Dads Accused of Drunken Driving With Children in Car

Vernon police arrested two dads accused of driving drunk with their young children in their vehicles in separate incidents over the weekend.

Police arrested a man from the Bronx late Friday night after receiving a call from a concerned person reporting an erratic driver on Talcottville Road -- Route 83.

The caller contacted police at 11:42 p.m. and followed the driver, who had it pulled into Countrywood Apartments at 631 Talcottville Road in Vernon.

Police responded and gave Kwadwo Kwakye, 26, of Bronx, New York, a field sobriety test, which he failed, police said.

Two children, ages 4 and 5, were in the car and Kwake did not have a valid license, according to police.

He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, driving without a license and risk of injury to children.

The children were placed with a family member. Kwake posted a $2,000 bond and is due in Rockville Superior Court on Nov. 19.

At 9:12 p.m. on Sunday, a police officer noticed an erratic driver on Route 30 and stopped Robert Apted, 41, of South Street in Vernon, nearby on South Street.  An infant was in the car, according to police.

Apted failed a field sobriety test and the car was unregistered, police said.

Apted was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, risk of injury to a minor and operating an unregistered motor vehicle. 

He posted a $500 bond and is due in court on Nov.  19.
