Two Officers Injured at a Traffic Stop in New Haven

Two New Haven police officers were injured, one man was shot and multiple cars were damaged after a routine traffic stop turned violent Saturday night.

Officers attempted to stop a black Acura near Spring Street and Howard Avenue around 7:18 p.m. when the driver of the vehicle drove off, said Officer Joe Avery, New Haven Police spokesperson.

The Acura was spotted again on Ella T. Grasso Boulevard and police tried to block the vehicle in. But the driver struck the police cruiser and fled from the scene again, said Avery.

The Acura then struck a vehicle at the intersection of George Street and Sherman Ave before driving off a third time and striking another vehicle at the intersection of Sherman Avenue and Whalley Avenue, said Avery.

The driver then pulled into a Mobile gas station parking lot where two officers began to approach the car on foot, said Avery.

According to Avery, the driver of the car accelerated and struck one of the officers, throwing him onto the hood of his car.

The second officer then fired a single round at the driver, striking him in the upper chest,  which caused the Acura to collide to with a parked vehicle in the parking lot, said Avery.

The driver was transported to a local hospital to be treated for a non-life threatening gun shot wound, said Avery.

The two officers that were injured in the altercation were also transported to local hospitals with minor injuries, Avery said.

Police are not releasing the names of either of the officers or the suspects until Monday.
