UConn Student Awarded Truman Scholarship for Public Service

A junior at the University of Connecticut has been named a Truman Scholar.

Wanjiku (Wawa) Gatheru, a junior from Pomfret who is majoring in environmental studies, is one of 62 students across the country honored for their public service by the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation.

She is the seventh UConn student honored and the second in as many years. It is the first time the school has had back-to-back winners in more than 30 years.

Gatheru has been a student leader in numerous conservation and political activities on campus. She was a founding member of the President's Council on Race and Diversity and played a role in the successful implementation of an environmental literacy general education requirement at UConn.

The honor comes with a $30,000 scholarship toward graduate school.
