Cops: Art Stolen for Drugs

New Haven police have found tens of thousands of dollars worth of stolen art and the guy police said took the paintings was probably planning on using them to feed his drug habit.

Police believe some of the artwork had been stolen from a Yale art gallery and might include work of Unabomber victim and Yale professor David Gelernter.

Police discovered two dozen or so paintings are estimated to be worth $40,000 during a raid of Bruno Nestir’s Sylvan Avenue home this weekend.

In addition to the Yale gallery paintings, police also found about $6,000 worth of artwork stolen from a public library.

Police also found drugs and said Nestir stole the artwork to feed his drug habit. In all, police found two handguns, three rifles, five marijuana joints, 10 bags of heroin, 17 bags of marijuana, five grams of marijuana in a clear sandwich bag, packaging material and $987 in cash, police told the New Haven Register.
