Union Treasurer Accused of Gambling Away Firefighters' Money

An overdraft last week on the Norwell, Massachusetts Firefighters Union account set off a string of events that resulted in the arrest of the union's treasurer.

The overdrawn checking account drew questions that union members wanted to ask treasurer Truong Nguyen of Quincy.

When the 35-year old firefighter failed to show up at police headquarters on Saturday with the books and bank statements, detectives got a warrant for his arrest.

According to police, Norwell firefighters discovered 24 cancelled checks made out to Nguyen and signed by him.

Some of the transactions dated back to October 2009.  By the time the money was found missing, the union's checking account was drained.

Over the weekend, Norwell police got a tip that the firefighter was at Foxwoods gambling in a casino.

Working with Connecticut State Police, Nguyen was arrested at the casino and charged with embezzlement.

Pending extradition to Massachusetts, Nguyen remains behind bars in Connecticut on $99,000 bail.
