The United States Coast Guard used two ships Thursday to attempt to break through the ice along the Connecticut River.
Two 65-foot sister ships the Hawser and Bollard made an attempt to get through ice in Essex and move north towards Middletown to break through the ice jam.
The ice jam is six miles long and extends from Hamburg Cove to an area along the river in the southern portion of Middletown.
Flood warnings remain in effect along the Connecticut River and the Housatonic River.
